The Kenya High Commission is deeply saddened by the untimely death of one of Kenya's greatest ambassadors, and Africa's icon of hope and inspiration, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai.

Prof. Maathai was the driving force behind the pioneering Green Belt Movement that organised women in rural Kenya to plant trees- not just to combat deforestation and soil erosion, but to generate local income, education and resources. Since 1977, more than 40 million trees have been planted. In 2004, Prof. Maathai became the first African woman and- and the first environmentalist -to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Prof. Maathai was at the forefront of the conservation and protection of forests and water towers in Kenya. Many will remember her drive for the protection of the Mau Forest Complex in Kenya, a critical water tower in the region.

The Public is invited to sign a condolence book, which will remain open from Wednesday, 28th September 2011 to Friday 7th October 2011, at the Kenya High Commission, 45 Portland Place W1B 1AS.

Kenyan scholars in US to attend investment forum PDF Print E-mail

Top Kenyan scholars based in the US are among thousands of Kenyans living in North America expected to attend an Investment Conference organised by the Kenya government through its Embassy in Washington, DC

Professor’s Ali Mazrui, Ngugi wa Thoing’o, Calestous Juma and Makau Mutua are some of the leading Kenyan ‘brain power’ abroad who have already confirmed participation in the Kenya Diaspora Conference scheduled for October 8-9, 2011.

Others who have already confirmed participation are Mugo Kibati of Vision 2030 delivery secretariat, PS David Nalo of EAC, Ambassador Arun Singh, Embassy of India, Tirop Kosgey, PS ministry of Housing and Michael Kamau, PS ministry of roads. Also attending are Cyrus Njiru, PS ministry of Transport and Mzalendo Kibunja, Chairman National Cohesion and Integration Commission.

They are expected to lead some illuminating and insightful discussions in the two-day conference on the Role of the Kenyan Diaspora in Kenya’s development, in view of a Diaspora friendly new constitutional dispensation.

In the past few years, the Kibaki administration has expended a lot of time, resources and energy in wooing the Diaspora since they became the country’s biggest donor with remittances exceeding Foreign Direct Investment and Official Development Assistance. The housing industry in Kenya is currently booming partly because of the Diaspora money.

The conference, whose theme is VISION 2030 AND BEYOND: SHARING THE VISION will be held at the Washington Marriot Wardman Park 2660, Woodley Road NW Washington, DC 20008. Registration is going on at the www.kenyaembassy.com.

Ambassador Elkanah Odembo and his team at the Embassy told The Standard on the phone that Kenyans living in the US are registering in large numbers. While urging those who have not already registered to do so, they said they have targeted between 400 and 700 attendees.

According to a press release sent to The Standard by the Kenyan Embassy in Washington, DC, the conference is being held to facilitate the growth and development of productive networks and linkages of the Diaspora with Kenyan institutions, organizations and firms, in different areas for national development.

It’s also meant to highlight and encourage the achievements of Diaspora in US in different fields and to explore how their resources, knowledge, skills, competences, technology, among others, can be harnessed systematically for Kenya’s political, economic and socio-cultural development.

"Most importantly, the conference is expected to launch partnership between Kenya government, civil society and private sector with the Diaspora in implementing Kenya’s Vision 2030 and ensure that the Diaspora remains engaged in the development of Kenya – from remittances to investment and entrepreneurship," Said the statement in part.

Official estimates indicate that the Kenya Diaspora is about three million. In the US alone, it is estimated that there are about half a million Kenyans. This number could go as high as a million since there is an equal, if not more number of the so-called undocumented Kenyans.

In the last few years, the Diaspora has played a huge role in national development through their remittances to Kenya. Remittances have continued to increase on a yearly basis and in April 2011 they increased by 33 percent to $70.1 million from 2010 as the economic recovery continued in Europe andNorth America. Remittances surged to $266.5 million in the first four months of 2011, comparedwith$196.5millionin2010.

56% of the remittances in April came from North America while 26% was from Europe. The government argues that, time has come now for the Diaspora in partnership with government, to leverage the remittances and also to move beyond them to do bigger things that will develop the country.

Hope for affordable housing in Kenya PDF Print E-mail
Written by ESTHER MUGOH

Dubbed ULTRA SPAN the new environmentally friendly and relatively affordable roofing truss has been developed by the two firms with the aim of the stemming the use of wooden roofing trusses and ultimately curbing environmental degradation caused by logging.
A truss is a frame made of pieces of wood or metal used to support a roof or bridge.
The new roofing structure is custom made for a two bed roomed house complete with a roof will retail for an estimated Ksh 160,000. (US$1975) A high end custom made structure will retail for around Ksh 600,000. (US$7407)

Speaking during the launch of the product, Mabati Rolling Mills Chairman Dr. Manu Chandaria said the idea of coming up with the product had been borne out of a need to create affordable shelter for the poor and vulnerable.
He noted that by using ULTRA-SPAN- a light gauge steel truss system- housing contractors and developers can now offer a cost effective, strong, long lasting, environment friendly, easy to erect roof truss system.
"If we can harness the energies of our employed youth to distribute and erect these structures, these too can be a good source of mass employment for our youth" he said.
Speaking at the launch where Equity Bank also signed a partnership for a credit extension facility with MRM to enable Kenyans access the environmentally friendly roofing materials Equity Bank CEO Dr. James Mwangi termed the global housing situation as a crisis adding that it is a challenge that requires concerted efforts by both the public and private sector.
"Whereas shelter is so basic it is unfortunate that billions of people around the world cannot afford it yet they need it like any of us. By its very nature housing represents a major investment requiring substantive capital outlay simply because of technology and materials we have used in the past," he said.
He hailed the new roofing system as revolutionary adding that only technological innovation would unlock Kenya's housing challenge.
Noting that the cost of mortgage remained way above the reach of many Kenyans due to the high cost of housing Dr Mwangi said Equity Bank would now be able come up with a financing package to help as many Kenyans acquire decent housing.
"This new product will go a long way in bringing affordable housing closer to majority of Kenyans living in informal settlements especially in areas that do not have decent housing," he said.
Epco Builders Limited Managing Director, Mr. Ramji Varsani said the new product provided immense opportunities for the Kenyan building and construction industry.
"By replacing conventional wood our forest covers will be protected," he said.
Mr. Stephen Fray, Group MD, MiTek Australia said Kenya marks an important focal point for the company adding that it would form the basis for the firm's operations in the East African region.
Safal Mitek is a joint venture between Mabati Rollings Mills limited and Mitek Industries limited South Africa. Mitek has licensed Safal Mitek limited for the distribution and manufacture of the roofing products in Kenya and most of the Comesa region.
Technology has often been trumpeted as key in unlocking the housing crisis facing Kenya today and analysts have severally noted that alternative and cheaper ways of building if adopted can in turn bring down the cost of housing in Kenya.
All players in the sector have therefore often been urged to come together and explore cheaper building solutions that can in turn lower cost of property.
