United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has commended Kenya for her pivotal role in regional peace.
The UN Secretary General, who made the remarks when he met and held discussions on Sunday with Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki at the UN Headquarters in New York, noted that the UN understands and acknowledges Kenya’s role in the Sudan and Somalia peace process.
He said that the World body was keen on peace and security issues in Africa and especially in the Horn of Africa.
The UN Secretary General said that UN would continue to support Kenya in its lead role of brokering peace in the region especially in Sudan and Somalia.
During the occasion, Mr Moon also hailed Kenya for enacting a new constitution which not only provides for comprehensive human rights could accelerate both social and economic prosperity of the nation.
On his part, President Kibaki express gratitude to Mr Moon and the United Nations fraternity for the unwavering support to Kenya’s reform process including the adoption of the new constitution last month.
President Kibaki noted that Kenya had made a bold step to review and overhaul its governance structures to prepare the country face modern challenges and opportunities.
President Kibaki said Kenya’s experience in the entire process of enacting the new Constitution is a valuable lesson that could act as model in Africa and beyond.
The Head of State expressed confidence that the newly enacted constitution would act as anchor to the country’s long term peace, stability and prosperity.
The President underlined the need for world leaders to engage leadership of both parties in the Sudan peace process as the country prepared to hold a referendum January year.
The Head of State informed UN Secretary General that Kenya would be hosting a regional conference on Sudan later this year.
The UN Secretary General also assured President Kibaki that the global body would strengthen UN operations in Kenya by appointing a Director General to head the UN offices in Nairobi.
In attendance were Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetang'ula, National Planning and Development Minister Wycliffe Oparanya, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN Amb Muburi Muita and other senior government officials.
