Although only about 24% of the land in Kenya is arable, agriculture has since pre-independence days been the mainstay of the countrys economy, accounting for over two thirds of its exports. About three quarters of Kenyas labour force is employed in this sector which contributes 24% to the GDP from products such as Tea, Coffee, Horticultural produce and Pyrethrum among many others. Through improvement in agricultural production, the Kenyan government has focused on alleviating poverty, increasing food production and dealing with environmental degradation.
