Pyrethrum, a natural insecticide has been grown in Kenya since 1928. The Pyrethrum Board of Kenya was established in 1934 to oversee to all activities related to the production and processing of pyrethrum for the benefit of growers and consumers. By the end of Second World War, Kenya had become a major source of pyrethrum, accounting for more than 65% of the global supply, a leadership which the country has steadfastly maintained to the present time. The number of 'active' pyrethrum farmers, has stabilized at 200,000 for some time, although acreage under the crop has fallen by over a half. One of the reasons for this is because synthetic products used to fight mosquitoes, cockroaches and other insects, have in recent years provided considerable competition to pyrethrum as they are sold cheaply on world markets. However, pyrethrum products are acknowledged as safe, as they are natural and quickly disappear into the environment unlike products such as DDT.
The Pyrethrum Board of Kenya remains firmly committed to serving its international clientele of distributors, manufacturers and ultimate consumers of end-use products. The US is a major buyer of Kenya's pyrethrum.
